Ardbeg - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ardbeg Uigeadail, (no age), 54.2% ABV, named after the loch that provides the distillery with water.
Ardbeg often bottles its whiskies at a higher alcohol level than the minimum 40% ABV.
Very Young Ardbeg - For Discussion was first sold in 2003 as a 6 yo, to give Ardbeg-lovers the chance to taste the first whisky produced since the reopening in 1997.

Ardbeg: Islay distillery- Scotch Whisky -
Ardbeg whisky is not used in blends, with may be one exception: Black Bottle which claims to contain whisky of each of the active distilleries on Islay.
Drawn entirely from first-fill casks, this is a six year old bottling of Ardbeg and the first of a series of annual bottlings from the same distillate.
This smoky character of Ardbeg whisky from this period was due to the fact there was no fan in the pagoda roof over the kiln.

Review of Ardbeg Islay whisky by AWA, AWA Ardbeg page, Whisky test/whisky hit list - Ardbeg information, Whisky, ...
Ardbeg was founded by the Macdougall family in 1815, which makes it the second oldest disyillery on Islay.
Ardbeg is operated by Allied Distillers but they do not sell its produce officially as a single malt.
Until its closure the distillery was able to make all its own malt, the last distillery on Islay to be able to do so, and the kilning was done exclusively over peat fires (most distillers only kiln for part of the time over peat).

Unchillfiltered, cask strength (although at a mild 42%abv), it is everything that Ardbeg is famous for, intensely peaty, sweet, complex and a finish that lingers well into the night.

Ardbeg Ten Years Old is a very special bottling for the Ardbeg distillery as it is the first non-chill filtered whisky in the Ardbeg range.
Due to the limited stocks of Ardbeg, it is likely to be the last Vintage we declare for at least ten years.
Now, fresh Ardbeg is once again flowing freely, still using the Distillery's own private water supply which runs down over the peat and rocks from Loch Uigeadail.

There are quite a few special edition bottlings from Ardbeg and there will probably be more made available as the new owners experiment with their new acquisition.
There have been several bottlings from Gordon and MacPhail (20, 30 and recently 22 and 30-year-old), all very good but hurt somewhat by dilution to 40 vol.
A 12-year-old Cadenhead and an 11-year-old Murray McDavid are both softer than the distillery bottling, most likely the effect of maturing in warehouses in other parts of Scotland.

During most of the 1990's Ardbeg was very hard to find apart from the odd Gordon and MacPhail bottling, but by the time the new owners had the Ardbeg distillery up and running again Ardbeg was becoming much more widely available, in the form of the new OB's but as independent bottlings as well.
Ardbeg 25yo 'Lord of the Isles' (46%, OB, bottled in 2001, 70cl) was the very first bottle in Holland, brought to Amsterdam by Ardbeg's Stuart Thompson for a tasting session at De Still in
Ardbeg 10yo 'TEN' (46%, OB, bottled +/- 1999, Non Chill-filtered, 70cl) was an early release.

 Spirits: Straight Shooters Robb Report
Ardbeg long had been known as the producer of the most peat-heavy whisky in this region characterized by smoky single malts, but what we discovered, in an isolated corner of the warehouse, were a few barrels of unpeated Scotch distilled in 1980, shortly after Ardbeg closed its malting operations.
Labeled Ardbeg Kildalton in honor of Scotland& oldest Celtic cross, which is located near the distillery, the 1,200 existing bottles of the spirit sell for £95 (approximately $183) apiece.
Tasting the spirit, we noticed Ardbeg’s traditional fruitiness and multiple layers of spice, but we detected only a hint of smoke, a remnant of the island’s peated water used in the fermentation process.

There was a family of Macdougals at Ardbeg from 1798, one of whom started a legal distillery in 1815, which was producing around 500 gallons a day by 1835.
Over the centuries Islay has been occupied by Celts, Picts, Gaels and Vikings, and some of the old ruins standing on the island are a reminder of its turbulent past.
Of the three, Ardbeg uses the most heavily peated malt, but paradoxically does not produce a whisky which is as smoky / medicinal as Laphroaig or Lagavulin.
