I couldn't say that Beamish Stout tastes smokey, it is more - in my opinion - very good balanced in maltiness and hop bitterness.
I was disappointed as well when I came to Ireland, I cannot drink "lager" here, because they are so light in flavour, aroma and alcohol, not the stuff I use to drink in Austria/Germay/France and so on.
In some way it's "sweet", even compared to Murphy's Stout, which has a quite harsh bitterness.
