 Bruichladdich: Islay distillery- Scotch Whisky -
From May 2003 Bruichladdich is bottled at the distillery -the only Islay whisky that is distilled, matured and bottled on the Island.
The palate is smooth, and continues on the malt sweetness and on exotic fruit fragrances.
All Bruichladdich is bottled un chill filtered, caramel free and at 46%.

He won a bottle of thirty year old Bruichladdich when he was about 22 when he first discovered the elegance of this malt, which he could compare to some of the great wines he tastes.
Amongst the new owners of Bruichladdich is Jim McEwan the mythic character of distillation on Islay who celebrated 40 years in whisky industry in 2003 after starting at the age of 15 as a cooper.
The two step distillation process at Bruichladdich is deliberately very slow – a trickle distillation - constantly watched by the still man who carries a great responsibility in the quality of the final product.

 Bruichladdich and the Distillery
Bruichladdich have just completed their new bottling plant, this makes them unique on the island in that the whisky is distilled, matured and bottled on the island using Islay spring water for the bottling.
Bruichladdich is developing two new whiskies which should be ready in a few years, these will be peated rather more than the traditional, lighter spirit that is so characteristic.
The whisky is bottled at 46% since cold filtering is not used to retain the full range of flavours.

Apart from the traditionally lightly peated spirit that is still produced under the name Bruichladdich, two more heavily peated malts are being produced at the distillery.
In 1938 Bruichladdich (also known as Bruichladdie) was sold to Hatim Attari, Joheph W.Hobbs and Alexander W.Tolmie.
With the new bottling plant that was opened in 2003, Bruichladdich can now bottle its own malts on site, providing some much needed employment opportunities on this relatively remote part of Islay in the process.

 Bruichladdich
The whisky produced by Bruichladdich was traditionally one of the least peaty of the Islay malts, although ironically it is rated as the islanders' favourite.
This is a stonking cask strength whisky, made up of 100% refill sherry casks, and a mix of older lightly peated Bruichladdich spirit and the new heavily peated Port Charlotte 2001 spirit.
The second release of 15 year old from Bruichladdich, this time "enhanced" (they don't like the word "finish" anymore!) in casks that previously contained Sauternes wine.

There are plans to produce both the traditional Bruichladdich, as well as a more heavily peated version.
Like Bruichladdich, Bunnahabhain has a clean taste, almost light, a definite contrast to the more intense tastes of other Islay malts.
A Cadenhead 26-year-old (1969) is a good example -- a touch of salt added to spice, flowers and a bit of wood.

Among the seven distilleries currently active in the isle of Islay, Bruichladdich, often known as "The Laddie", distinguishes itself in producing a whisky which is only lightly peated.
In the meantime, Bruichladdich which had been originally equipped with two pot stills, had seen its capacity being doubled with the installation of a second pair of stills.
Whereas the majority of the malts distilled in the isle are characterised by a rate of phenol with a figure between 30 and 50 PPM (Parts per million of phenol), that of Bruichladdich contents itself with a mere 3 PPM.

A mix/vatting/blending/fudging?? of various styles from Bruichladdich Distillery&; some first fill sherry casks from 1989, 90 + 91 with some young, peaty 'Port Charlotte style, bottled exclusively for a few of us independent whisky types.
They say "A mix of lightly and medium peated bruichladdich of different ages - matured in bourbon casks, a limited period release of approx 6,000 bottles but NOT a numbered limited edition bottling".
The oldest Bruichladdich ever bottled, release of 550 bottle.

 Bruichladdich whisky visit - detailed tasting notes
The Bruichladdich distillery had now become an insignificant and soon to be mothballed part of a huge global empire with the US giant Gallahers (Jim Beam Brands) buying up Whyte and Mackay and merging the ex-Invergordon distilleries under the JJB (Northern Europe) brand.
Eventually that too had to go and was bought in 1929 by a rather colourful character by the name of Joseph Hobbs for his company Associated Scottish Distillers.
At 8.26am on the 29th May 2001 this famous old distillery began production once again with Jim McEwan at the helm.

The whisky was deliciously balanced, clean and fresh, with a sherry influence in equilibrium with the typical fruity and grape characteristics of Bruichladdich.
Although the spirit was stored for 16 years in a refill sherry cask, the colour was very dark, as if the spirit came from a first fill cask.
At Bruichladdich, the Bruichladdich Ten went very well with the taste of the islay oysters.

Bruichladdich was owned by Invergordon Distillers from 1972 until 1993, but since the company's acquision that year by Whyte and Mackay, it has been mothballed along with two of the group's other distilleries, Tamnavulin and Tullibardine.

In addition, owing to the lightly peated barley being used, Bruichladdich has traditionally been a less heavy, less peated whisky, and is the most easily approached Islay Malt Whisky having a phenolic content of only 2 parts per million (ppm); Laphroaig has 30 ppm.

Bruichladdich distillery has today distilled a whisky with 92% alcohol content.
Considering that whisky is usually sold at around 40% to 46% alcohol and even a cask strength usually only reaches around 60% alcohol (At distillation it would have been around 70%, I'll let you search for 'Angels share' to understand the difference) this is obviously quite big news.
The building on the front right now has a roof and houses the bottling hall.

It has an oily texture, a delicate nose, and tastes of almonds and moss rather than peat, and sea-breeze.
In 1969 the distillery was bought by Invergordon Distillers as part of a programme designed to create an integrated distilling group.
After this point it was quickly passed to Associated Scottish Distillers Ltd, then to Ross and Coulter, A.B. Grant's company Bruichladdich Proprietors Ltd, and finally to Invergordon distillers, part of the Whyte and Mackay group.

Bruichladdich (pronounced Brew-ick-laddie) was one of the first to use concrete, which had only recently been granted a patent, in its construction.
