Boston.com / Your Life / House & Home / A cheaper option to chic Brunello
Brunello is the local name for sangiovese grosso, a variety of sangiovese, Tuscany's most important red grape; it ripens well on the surrounding hillsides to produce a wine with power, complexity, and suaveness.
Rosso is made either from grapes grown in vineyards not suitable for Brunello or from grapes grown in Brunello vineyards but that the producer feels are not quite up to Brunello standards.
Montalcino, a tiny town perched upon a mountain just south of the Chianti region in Tuscany, is home to one of Italy's greatest red wines, Brunello di Montalcino.

I Brunello di Montalcino 1999. Parte seconda

 Brunello
At table, Brunello is an excellent companion through the meal, and a sumptuous accompaniment for roast or broiled red meat, especially spicy game dishes, as well as with strong, mature cheeses.
Brunello is a monovarietal wine made from Sangiovese Grosso, harvested manually after careful selection of the bunches.
A classic wine for the cellar, Brunello can conserve its unique characteristics in the bottle for decades, further enhancing them with the mellowness that only time can bestow.

Wine: Best Producers: Tuscany, Italy--Brunello di Montalcino
Montalcino, one of Italy's premier wine towns, produces one of that country's most expensive wines: Brunello di Montalcino.
Brunello is famous for its austerity and extraordinary aging potential, but in recent years vinification techniques have lightened up; today's Brunellos are more notable for their rich, ripe, and generally attractive qualities.
These wines can be made from the same fruit as that used for Brunello di Montalcino, but in practice are often from younger vines, and always vinified and aged in a manner that allows them to be consumed younger.

 Brunello di Montalcino D.O.C.G.
Montalcino is believed to have produced wines since the 10th century, when the present walled city was first established after the Saracen raids.
Until the 1500s, records indicate that most of the wine produced was a highly valued sweet white wine of the Muscat grape called Moscadello di Montalcino.
Until the mid-1800s, the wines of Montalcino, whether red or white, were produced from the traditional Tuscan Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Trebbiano and Malvasia varieties.

The Consorzio of Brunello producers, incorporating virtually all of the winemaking estates, was established in 1967, just after Italian authorities declared Brunello one of the country's first DOC classified wines in 1966.
In Sienna in 1870, the first bottles of vintages 1863 and 1865 were exhibited as a superior ageing wine.

The wine for the Brunello is selected from the oldest vines and the most well-positioned vineyards and is bottled without filtration.
The Rosso di Toscano, rarely produced, is from Sangiovese that produces a less tannic wine.
The Rosso di Montalcino is handled just like the Brunello but is aged in large barrels for one year instead of three.

 brunello di montalcino
"Brunello di Montalcino" makes its appearance by the middle of the XIX century when Clement Santi, a chemist, makes a selection of Sangiovese Grosso grapes.
Until the middle of the Sixties "Brunello di Montalcino" was only known by some wine connoisseurs and into its area of production.
From that moment the tests followed one another in order to search a superior ageing wine and they have brought "Brunello di Montalcino" to be at the cutting edge of the image of Italian wine all over the world.

RED BOTTLE - Brunello di Montalcino
In a country like Italy, which has been producing wines for about 3,500 years, a Brunello di Montalcino can be considered a modern invention.
The young viticulturist had noted that a subvariety of Sangiovese, referred to as Grosso to distinguish it from the breed that had originated in the Chianti area and that produced smaller berries, was more resistant to attacks by phylloxera, which was then ravaging the vineyards of the district.
The first great vintage, officially, was the 1888 Brunello, of which five bottles still exist.

 Manachiara Brunello di Montalcino D.O.C.G
The warm Mediterranean climate is cooled by the region's altitude, allowing the intense luminosity to gradually ripen the grapes.
The vines of the Manachiara vineyard, the oldest of the estate, are thought to be rougly 45 years of age and occupy an extraordinary, seventeen-acre microclimate named "sunny morning," exposed to the southeast and suggesting its illumination from early morning through late afternoon.
Of the two Nardi estates within the commune of Montalcino, the Manachiara estate is the more recent and the smaller.

However, the innovative winemaker subjected the wine, as it still is, to a process of fining involving a stay of at least four years in oak casks, completed by a period in the bottle where in time it developed outstanding qualities.

Robert Parker Online: 1999 Brunello di Montalcino
But relative to other Brunellos tasted this evening, this wine is a bit too soft and lacked the depth of most other wines.
While this Brunello had a few fans, most tasters thought it took things to excess, was high in alcohol, not a balanced wine, and really didn't have much in the way of classic Brunello character.
fter two successful tastings of 1997 Brunello di Montalcino, we were particularly anxious to taste the newly released, highly touted 1999s, a vintage that was reputed to be in the same league with the brilliant 1997s.

Italian Wine Guide: Barolo, Amarone, Chianti and more
From nearby Montalcino comes Brunello di Montalcino, another famous Italian red wine which, like Chianti, is another DOCG wine made from Sangiovese (Brunello is the local name for this grape).
Recioto di Soave, also from this region, is a sweet white wine, strangely accorded the DOCG status, made from partially dried grapes.
Both of these wines are made from air-dried grapes, predominantly the Corvina variety, and fermented out to dryness for the Amarone, whilst the Recioto is kept sweet.

But overall, based on blind tasting 26 "wine of the vintage" candidates, we’d say that the average score of the major 1997 Brunellos would fall in the lower 90s rather than the upper 90s that are so prominently displayed on their resumes.
The tannins take over on the palate, suggesting this is an old-style Brunello in need of cellaring.
After all, it seems as if every wine carries with it a huge 95 or higher rating from either The Wine Advocate, International Wine Cellar, or Wine Spectator.
