Burton upon Trent also known as Burton-on-Trent, or simply Burton, is a large town straddling the River Trent in the east of Staffordshire, England, which originally grew up around the monastery of St. Modwen.
Burton came to dominate this trade, and at its height one quarter of all beer sold in Britain was produced here.
The Burton suburb of Branston is where the well-known Branston Pickle was invented.

It also shows that with its own saint and important alabaster carving industry in the Middle Ages and its remarkable Victorian churches, Burton has a much more varied history than its pre-eminence as a brewing town might suggest.
