Diageo plc, the largest multinational beer, wine and spirits company in the world, listed on the London Stock Exchange was formed in 1997 from the merger of Guinness plc and Grand Metropolitan plc.
In December 2003 Diageo provoked controversy over its decision to change its Cardhu brand Scotch whisky from a single malt to a vatted malt (also known as a pure malt) whilst retaining the original name and bottle style.
In 2002 Diageo sold the Burger King fast food restaurant chain worldwide to a consortium led by US firm Texas Pacific for $1.5bn.

Diageo's decision to sell Guinness World Records, however, is not seen as a signal that the company wants to dispose of the Guinness beer brewing business.
Diageo, which earlier this year acquired a portfolio of drinks brands from Seagram, is also selling its Pillsbury food business and hopes to float its Burger King fast-food unit.
Diageo is also expected to impose restrictions on any buyer's right to use the Guinness brand, limiting its use strictly to the context of World Records, the report added.
