Topic: Grog

The Mavens' Word of the Day
In Australia "grog" is generically used to refer to alcohol; but historically it was more particularly applied to a rum ration--known as a "tot." My fiancee then informed me that in Germany, particularly in the North, "grog" is a term used for a hot toddy (alcoholic drink).
The use of grog in German is unquestionably a borrowing of the English term.
Grog originally referred to a mixture of rum cut with water.

 ARRRR.COM - Grog Information
18th Century Grog is a mixture of rum, sugar, lemon juice, and water, and it was issued to the crews of the Royal Navy.
In the Scumm bar grog flows like water and a side effect is the small fortune the cook has to spend replacing the mugs which it dissolves.
The lemon juice kept the men healthy and lowered the risk of scurvy, sugar should take the bite off the lemon juice, and the rum improved the taste and kept up the spirit of the crew, while the water weakened the alcoholic effect of the drink.

The derivative "groggy," which when it appeared around 1770 meant simply "drunk," had by the 19th century acquired its modern meaning of "woozy, unsteady, not fully awake," not necessarily due to drink.
Much military slang eventually percolates out into use by the general public, often with a slightly altered meaning, and so it was that within a few decades "grog" had become a popular synonym for any alcoholic drink.
That makes "grog" something of an exception to the First Law of Etymology, which states that the more intriguing a word or phrase origin story is, the more likely it is to be utter hogwash.
