 Islay - Malt Whisky Regions - www.scotchwhisky.com
Islay whiskies generally reverse the characteristics of Speysides, tending to be dry and peaty; behind the smoke, however, can be gentle mossy scents, and some spice.
The southern Islay distilleries produce powerfully phenolic whiskies, with aromas redolent of tar, smoke, iodine and carbolic.
Among their products are the strongest flavoured of all malt whiskies, a property which endears them to some and disgusts others.

This area tends to produce whiskies in which the softness of the malted barley itself is evident, untempered by Highland or Island peatiness or coastal brine and seaweed.
The far north of the Highlands has several whiskies with a notably heathery, spicy, character which probably derives both from the local soil and the coastal location of the distilleries.

This whisky had been filled into a fresh American oak bourbon cask at Bruichladdich on October 22, 1964, the very same year I was starting my training as an apprentice cooper at Bowmore, less than a mile away across the waters of Loch Indaal on the shores of Islay.
But all the whisky was distilled by the same men using the same old Victorian machinery, including the exceptionally tall and narrow stills that provide the hallmark elegant and floral Bruichladdich style.
Back in 1881, Bruichladdich was made from peated barley, as most pot still whiskies were at the time.
