Lager - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The word lager was popularised by the major commercial breweries in the UK promoting light coloured keg beers, purporting to be continental beers.
While the term Pilsener is sometimes used interchangeably with lager, a stricter definition sees pilseners as being specifically pale and bitter beers around 5% abv, a subset of lager as a general term for all beers brewed using slow acting lager yeast.
Lagered beers run the gamut from sweet to bitter, and from pale to black.

 Beer: Lagers, Pilsners, Light Beers
Lager styles are a relatively recent on the global beer scene, when one considers the centuries of ale brewing that predated the production of lagers.
Essentially these are pale lager styled beers with fewer calories.
Examples brewed in and around Munich tend to be a little fuller-bodied and sometimes have a hint of bready sweetness to the palate, a characteristic of the typical Bavarian malts used.

BYO - 10 Keys to Great Lager
Lager beer styles are usually differentiated from their ale counterparts by the use of bottom-fermenting yeast strains.
The result is that lager beers usually have a much cleaner, crisper aroma and flavor profile than can be produced by top-fermenting ale yeast at warmer temperatures.
Conversely, while most modern beer drinkers likely were introduced to beer first through lager styles, the majority of homebrewers enter the hobby by making beers that fall into the ale category.

Most low calorie lagers are produced by simply adding water to regular beer until they become a low calorie beer.

BYO - Lager: Pale Pilsner to Malty Munich
Lager yeast isn't as energetic as ale yeast.
After secondary fermentation is complete and the beer is racked to your lagering vessel, you'll need to store the beer at 30¡ to 35¡ F for up to three months.
Because lager yeast works best in the 50¡ to 55¡ F range, the chemistry of fermentation is quite different than with ale yeasts, which work best at 60¡ to 70¡ F. The result: Beer that's lager, not ale.

Lager not lagered long enough - BrewBoard
Most commercial breweries will lager their beers for 4 weeks before bottling/ kegging.
3 weeks is a minimal lagering period generally for beer under 1.050, as you go higher, the more time your beer will need.
Insufficiently conditioned lagers generally taste harsh or sometimes "green." There is no real discernible flavor that comes or goes, but the beer comes together as a whole with lagering time.
