Malvasia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Malvasia (also known as Malvazia or Malmsey) is a group of wine grape varieties grown in Italy (including Sicily, Lipari, and Sardinia), Corsica, the Iberian Peninsula, the Canary Islands, the island of Madeira, California, and Australia.
Presently, however, "Malvasia" generally refers to unfortified white table or desert wines produced from this grape, while "Malmsey" refers to a sweet variety of Madeira wine.
These grapes are used to produce white (and more rarely red) table wines, dessert wines, and fortified wines of the same name, or are sometimes used as part of a blend of grapes, such as in Vin Santo.

Malvasia istriana (Vitis vinifera) is a domestic and widespread grape cultivar in the Istrian wine region that gives the characteristic white wine.
Malvasia istriana base wine (85 %) was blended with Chardonnay, Sauvignon blanc, Pinot blanc, Prosecco and Muscat, from grape varieties grown in the Istrian region.
In the ageing process, Malvasia istriana loses its aroma (freshness and fruitiness) and hence it is usually consumed as a young wine.

Today, Malvasia generally is thought of as an Italian variety, and its used to make a wide range of wines, from dry (often blended with Trebbiano) to off-dry (the preferred style among the cadre of California vintners who make it), to very sweet dessert wines.
The Malvasia name was derived from the Greek port of Monemvasia, through which the luscious dessert wines of the Middle Ages passed en route to western and northern Europe.
In Madeira, vintners typically used Malvasia for making extremely sweet, fortified, ageworthy wines that are golden in their youth and gradually turn amber over time.

Of great importance, however, for the serious scholar, is the publication of the translation, by Anne Summerscale, of Malvasia's Life of the Carracci taken from Count Carlo Cesare Malvasia's Felsina pittrice: vite de pittori bolognesi alla maesta christianissima di Luigi XIIII (1678).
It is important to highlight the important contribution made to our understanding of the controversy that raged in the seventeenth century over Northern versus Southern Italian painters by Pennsylvania State University Press in publishing these two English translations of Bellori and Malvasia's studies on the Carracci.
Summerscale not only offers a translation of Malvasia's Life of the Carracci, which is itself a daunting undertaking, but also provides the reader with an extremely comprehensive and contextual commentary on Count Malvasia and his work.
