Natto makes an excellent bachelor's meal, as all you have to do is pour a little shoyu on the natto (chopped onions, etc. are optional) right in the container, mix it and pour it over hot or cold gohan.
I use to wonder how people could say such things about the smell (aroma) of natto, Baachan's tsukemono and other delicacies, when they would eat such things as blue cheese and other pungently aromatic "delicacies".
I like some of it -- tsukemono and kimchee among them -- but fish stews, cabbage dishes and such can be pretty noxious.

Natto is probably the quintessential "weird food" of Japanese cuisine, like haggis in Scotland or lutefisk in Norway.
The best way to have it is with a little soy sauce, a bit of hot mustard (most natto brands come with a tiny mustard pack), mixed well until plenty of gooey strings form around the beans.
While living in Japan I ate raw squid eyeballs, deep fried eel heads, raw liver of a manta ray, and all sorts of squishy, squiggley things that defy description.
