Old English language - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Like other West Germanic languages of the period, Old English was fully inflected with five grammatical cases, which had dual plural forms for referring to groups of two objects, in addition to the usual singular and plural forms.
Unlike modern English, Old English is a language rich with morphological diversity and is spelled essentially as it is pronounced.
The second major source of loanwords to Old English were the Scandinavian words introduced during the Viking raids of the ninth and tenth centuries.

The Old English Sheepdog is a fine herding dog, but he has also been used for reindeer herding because he tolerates cold weather so well.
Sometimes called "Bobtail," the Old English Sheepdog's tail was customarily docked in the 18th century as a way of identifying tax-exempt herding dogs.

A History of the English Language
West Germanic is the ancestor of modern German, Dutch, Flemish, Frisian, and English.
In Middle English name was pronounced "nam-a," five was pronounced "feef," and down was pronounced "doon." In linguistic terms, the shift was rather sudden, the major changes occurring within a century.
North Germanic evolved into the modern Scandinavian languages of Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, and Icelandic (but not Finnish, which is related to Estonian and is not an Indo-European language).

Old English Language Grammar by Cyril Babaev
Though Gothic is referred to the East Germanic subgroup of languages, its similar sounds, morphological forms and vocabulary with Old English, Old High German, Old Scandinavian and other ancient Germanic languages are quite frequent.
The next group of foreign loanwords were taken from Scandinavian dialects, after the Vikings occupied much of the country in the 9th - 11th centuries.
The Ablaut in its classical Germanic forms is present in Gothic, Old High German and many other ancient Germanic languages.

 Engl401 About Old English
The medieval languages most closely related to Old English are Old Frisian, Flemish, and Old Low German.
But there are a couple of factors that affected the English language that tended to hasten linguistic change in English.
By the time of Chaucer (end of the 14th century) when it was reestablishing itself as a prestige language in England, English had adopted hundreds of words from French and quite a few from Old Norse, and had undergone important simplifications in its system of inflections.

In the mid eighth century a new wave of Northmen turned their attention toward England, this time the Danish Vikings.
London was the hub of government, commerce and literature in England in the Middle Ages so it was this dialect which conferred prestige and grew in popularity.
The re-establishment of English was gradual, but as England moved into the fourteenth century, English was used as the native tongue by the majority of the population in a number of dialects.

 OLD ENGLISH RIDDLES
The similarities that many of the Old English riddles are said to bear to the enigmata might indicate a conscious imitation of these sources, or they might just as easily bespeak the use by writers of both genres of a similar traditional or popular source (Whitman 110).
The Old English riddles are often compared with the Anglo-Latin enigmata poems of Aldhelm, Tatwine and Eusebius, and to a certain extent to their Late Latin predecessor, Symphosius.
The authorship and dating of the riddles is also largely a matter of scholarly contention.

 "Ring Verse" in Old English
The composer has, however added material that is very similar in content to those fragments of The Long List of the Ents preserved in the Red Book.
The word eormenrodore is a hapax legomenon, otherwise unattested in any other Old English manuscript, and so was perhaps replaced by a more familiar, if less accuarate, eormengrunde.
Thus, it is hard to tell whether eormenrodore was a copying error, a scribal emendation, or whether the author was simply undecided over which word to use.

 Mastiff (Old English Mastiff)
Found in Britain as early as the Roman invasion, the Noble Old English Mastiff was probably brought to that island by Phoenician traders as early as the 6th century BC.

Since then, the Mastiff has been used as an arena gladiator by the Romans, in the bloody sport of bull, bear and dog combat, and as a sheep guardian, bodyguard, protector, and companion.
