Whiskey- usually made mostly from corn, though wheat whiskeys can be found, like Maker's Mark, Old Fitzgerald, and Old Rip Van Winkle.
Different grain makes for a different tasting whiskey, which says nothing of the differences in how these types of whiskey are made.

Haven't taken the rye plunge but it sounds like it may be too strongly flavored (spicy, pungent) for my taste.
Certainly it makes more sense to offset sweet vermouth with the tart pungency of rye than with the creamy sweetness of bourbon.

An interesting (and delicious, though too sweet) straight whiskey which was unavailable in America but highly popular in Europe is Four Roses, which has only recently been reintroduced in the U.S. There are, in fact, several straights that are export-only or duty-free-only but, although I hate to say it, they're not the best.
I have seen the future and, yes, there is quite a lot of whiskey in it.

The basic ingregients are ice (16 parts), whiskey (8 parts) and sweet vermouth (2 part) Variations include spring H2O (2 - 4 parts) maraschino cherry (1 - 2) a few dashes of bitters, and a few drops of maraschino cherry juice.

Ancient Age makes a pretty darn tasty mass-market rye, in case you live in the States and want to hit the local liquor store for a bottle.
There are a couple of fantastic small-batch canadian ryes out there, including but not limited to lot 40 and pike creek.
Most people think the levee is the thing that holds water back and rye is the liquor.

For this all-American whiskey, we chose the 4th of July for this blind tasting.  The sun burned perfectly for this warm weather mixed concoction:  the Highball.
The stronger, bolder ryes faired poorly in Round One.  Our hypothesis was that spring was at hand and that higher proof is more appealing in cold weather.  To remove the climatic factor, this round compared apples to apples as it were.  We held this close to tax time--when a stiff drink was a welcome relief!
Olde St. Nick Rye was only sold as an export.  It was supposed to be available domestically around mid-late 1999, but I never found it on my liquor store shelves.

A Special Note about Old Potrero: So the guy at Anchor Steam (the venerable San Francisco Brewer), Fritz Maytag, decided to make some whiskey the REAL old fashioned American way, before bourbon was even invented.
Rye is a cousin of bourbon, but it has a different mash bill (mix of grains), having over 51% rye (go figure!), the rest being a blend of corn, wheat and barley.
Rye tends to be drier and more bitter than bourbon.
