Boston.com / Business / SABMiller eyes China growth despite Harbin retreat
SABMiller, through CRB, has been active in the consolidation of China's beer industry, a process that is expected to continue for years in a market crowded with some 400 brewery firms.
SABMiller also has said it is looking to develop CRB's Snow brand beer on a nationwide basis, breaking beyond the geographic lines that have long fragmented the China beer market.
SABMiller is a force in China through its 49-percent owned China Resources Breweries (CRB), the country's second-largest brewer with market share of 10 percent.

 SABMiller moves on Harbin
London-based SABMiller, the world's second-biggest brewer, already owns 29.6% of Harbin Brewery, a 100-year-old company that is one of China's oldest beer producers.
SABMiller has interests in 30 Chinese breweries and a 49% stake in China Resources Breweries - China's second-largest beer-maker after Tsingtao Brewery.
The tug of war highlights the intense foreign interest in grabbing a piece of China's beer market, where a surge of foreign investment turned the country into the world's biggest beer producer in 2002, surpassing the United States.

CommentWire by Datamonitor - SABMiller: emerging markets are the key
SABMiller has released its beer volume figures for the 11 months to February 2005.
Excluding acquisitions, SABMiller's [SAB.L] beer volumes climbed 4% from a year earlier in South Africa, almost 10% in the rest of Africa and Asia, and 5% in Europe.
The large brewers are looking at squeezing as much revenue as they can out of these developed regions, and in the US this has led to a major focus on light and supposedly 'healthier' beers.

Anheuser-Busch Cos. Inc. :: SABMiller'S Taste Test Claims Found to Be 'Unsubstantiated'; Anheuser-Busch Wins TV Ad ...
SABMiller's own brewing staff has characterized their beer as more bitter and as having more after- taste, which most light beer consumers don't prefer.
The three ads are part of SABMiller's ongoing attacks against Anheuser-Busch, the No. 1 U.S. brewer, and Bud Light, the best-selling beer in the United States.
Instead, it asked which beer has "more flavor" or "more taste." These questions are ambiguous and likely were misinterpreted by respondents.

Fool.com: Beer Makers Can't Play Nice [Motley Fool Take] May 6, 2004
It's no secret SABMiller's goal is to merge portions of Harbin with another holding, China Resources Breweries, to control just over 14% of the Chinese beer market, trumping Anheuser-Busch's 12.9% share through Tsingtao Brewery Company.
A couple days of speculation over how the two beer giants might work together as owners of the Chinese brewer ended when SABMiller decided not to play nice, instead launching a $553 million takeover offer for the brewer, the first of its kind for a Hong Kong-listed Chinese company.
Playtime is over for Chinese beer maker Harbin Brewery Group and its two largest shareholders, Anheuser-Busch (NYSE: BUD) and Altria Group's (NYSE: MO) partly owned SABMiller.

SABMiller ready to take on the world?
SABMiller prides itself on being an efficient low cost beer producer; its new Port Elizabeth packaging plant is considered to be among the most up-to-date in the world.
SABMiller's two best sellers, Castle Lager and Carling Black Label, owe their position to their strength in the South African market and are unlikely to be developed globally, while even the Miller brand family derives 93 per cent of its total volume from the US.
The company expanded in China during 2001 with the acquisition of the Blue Sword Breweries Group and now has sufficient capacity to supply one sixth of the domestic beer market.

Scotland on Sunday - Business - SABMiller intent on expansion but may miss Molson
SABMiller’s problem is that it has been bumped down into third place in the beer rankings by the merger of Ambev and Interbrew - also last year - which created the current number one, Inbev (Anheuser is number two).
In the intensely competitive beer market, that is an uncomfortable position.
Last summer Anheuser-Busch, maker of Budweiser, won a bidding war with SABMiller for China’s Harbin Brewery group.

 SABMiller benefits from upmarket focus
He added that SABMiller had positioned itself well in Romania's emerging beer market by acquiring the SC Aurora brewery for $26 million (€20 million) in June this year.
Slovakia's beer market also dropped by around 13 per cent, in turn forcing SABMiller's volumes down by 8 per cent, whereas volumes in the Czech Republic declined by 5 per cent compared to levels set during 2003's exceptionally warm summer.
The Polish beer market crept up by 1 per cent in 2004, though most of this has been in lower priced segments.

SABMiller boosts western presence with Peroni deal
SABMiller said that Italy was a growing beer market, with a current estimated market size of 17 million hl.
Under the terms of the deal, Peroni will be managed as part of SABMiller Europe, where it would contribute 21 per cent of total beer volumes with sales of around 27 million hectolitres.
Peroni holds a strong number two position (25.2 per cent share) in the growing Italian beer market, with 2002 revenues of €494 million, and has the leading standard brand (Peroni) and the number three premium beer (Nastro Azzuro).

The Scotsman - Business - SABMiller
SABMiller seems to be doing okay in Europe, but beer volumes are down in its South African heartland and the company says profitability in Central America, which it also moved into this year, is behind expectations.
SABMiller’s shares have fallen 17 per cent since South African Breweries’ US$5.6 billion (£3.64 billion) acquisition of Miller Brewing of the US in May.
That has been partly due to market suspicion that SAB overpaid for a brand well behind market leader Anheuser Busch in the US.

SABMiller planning major European rollout — report
More importantly, perhaps, is the strong beer-drinking tradition in many of the countries targeted by SABMiller, which means that MGD will be vying for share of throat with several strong local brands, including many owned by SABMiller itself, including Pilsner Urquell in the Czech Republic and Lech in Poland.
Whether the US-style beer, generally regarded as insipid by many European drinkers, will be able to compete in markets where beer tastes are so deeply rooted remains to be seen.
Despite the major economic advancements in many former Soviet Bloc countries over the last decade, disposable incomes are still much lower there than in the west, and imported beer brands are likely to remain an expensive luxury for many consumers.

BUD wins China brewer Harbin as SAB withdraws bid - Food and Beverage - M&A
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) - SABMiller on Thursday withdrew its $550 million offer for China's Harbin Brewery, ceding control of the Chinese company to Anheuser-Busch in a battle between global beer giants.
Harbin Brewery was not an essential asset at any price," it said.
In a statement Wednesday to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, Harbin's board said it "warmly welcomes Anheuser-Busch becoming [its] strategic partner" and that it believes the American firm's "expertise and recent success in China in promoting its Budweiser brand across the country will benefit the company in establishing a nationwide brand for Harbin beer."
