Springbank: Campbeltown distillery- Scotch Whisky -
Springbank is one of the only distilleries to produce its own malt for 100%.
The peaty whisky being less to the taste of the blenders in the 1850's, Springbank was one of the first distilleries in Campbeltown to dry their malt above a coal fire.
Maturation happens in several types of cask: bourbon, refill, rum, madeira or sherry.

Springbank Distillery - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The distillery, located on the southern Kintyre penninsula, produces three distinct types of single malt Scotch whisky (the only two other distilleries in Scotland to produce more than one are Loch Lomond Distillery and Tobermory).
Springbank is one of the few remaining family owned distilleries.
While a few others still maintain the first step in the process, the malting of barley (which is becoming more rare), Springbank also bottles their own whisky.

Springbank's second product, Longrow, is distilled conventionally in two of the stills and uses malt which is entirely peat kilned, giving it a heeavier, almost Islay quality.
The distillery is one of only two in Scotland (the other being Glenfiddich) which bottle on site, and it prides itself on not chill-filtring its whisky at the bottling stage.
Springbank itself is bottled at many different ages, the older ones in particular - 21, 25 nad 30 years old - now beginning to make their mark, especially in the important Japanese market.

Bottled by the distillery for the Whisky Castle, Tomintoul.
Classic Springbank; creamy sherry sweetness, salt, with a complex musty sherry taste that must be from some excellent aged casks.
The 10-year-old Springbank will be with us for the forseeable future, but the distillery has recently re-casked a lot of stock from 1991 / 1992 into sherry casks so that the 10-year-old will have a more sherried character.

Campbeltown Scotch Single Malt Whisky Distilleries
Springbank releases have traditionally combined a special mixture of salt, oil, peat, brine, oak, and especially sherry.
Springbank originally produced Longrow on rare occasions and bottlings were hard to come by but has distilled Longrow each of the past ten years, assuring a continuing supply.
The distillery offered both an oak cask bottling as well as a sherry cask bottling.

Single Malt Scotch - Springbank Distillery
Springbank itself appears in a wide variety of vintages, ages, and woods, the most famous of which is the 1966, distilled from locally grown barley kilned over local peat.
Reviving an old Campbeltown name, the distillery will in 2006 bottle a whisky called Hazelburn, distilled in 1997.
As awareness of woods has increased in the industry, Springbank has mainly acquired Bourbon barrels, to highlight the character of the whisky itself, but most bottlings are vatted to give a touch of color and sweetness from sherry wood.

Springbank use bourbon casks for maturation but some sherry casks are used for added body.
The distillery also refuse to chill-filter or add artificial colouring to the whisky before bottling but prefers to bottle at the slightly stronger strength of 46 percent (ABV).
The whisky is distilled 2½ times from malted barley that has been lightly peated.

The mushrooming of distilleries was due to the introduction of the new Government legislation in 1814-15, 29 were founded in the next 20 years.
This is viable because the men who steep the barley, germinate it on the malting floors and dry it in the kiln, then change jobs to operate the mash tun, the washbacks and the stills.

Grain whisky may contain unmalted barley or other malted or unmalted grains such as wheat and maize and is typically distilled in a continuous column still, known as a Patent or Coffey still, the latter after Aeneas Coffey who developed it in 1831.
Must be distilled at a Scottish distillery from water and malted barley, to which only other whole grains may be added, have been processed at that distillery into a mash, converted to a fermentable substrate only by endogenous enzyme systems, and fermented only by the addition of yeast,

Springbank Distillery was founded in 1828 and is one of the very few distilleries that is still owned by descendants of its founders - the Mitchell family.
Its bottlings are done on the premises of the distillery which is very rare these days.
It also refuses to chill-filter the whisky before bottling, and it re-distills the foreshots and feints separately instead of adding them to the low wines in the distillation run.

Springbank One Distillery - Multiple Malts
Springbank Distillery, unique in the industry, oversees the completion of every part of the entire distillation process on this small site.malting, fermentation, distillation, warehousing, and bottling.
The final step in creating the Springbank flavor profile occurs when a portion of the low wines from the first still and a portion of the feints from the second still are then combined and distilled in the third still at the distillery.
If the malt is destined for the production of the more lightly peated Springbank, they build peat fires for only 6 hours and finish the drying for up to 30 hours of hot air.

Various bottlings of Springbank are produced but many are hard to obtain, even the distilleries own bottlings aren't overly easy to find but well worth looking out for.
Springbank is notorious for its variability but as it only ever varies from the very very good to excellent I wouldn't worry too much.
Malting right through to bottling is done on the site and unusually a small proportion of the whisky is triple distilled, but not all of it.

 springbank
In the late 19th century the whisky distilleries of Campbeltown prospered.
The Campbeltown whisky was sought after by blenders, by this time Campbeltown whisky was close to Islay whisky in taste and character.
But in the beginning of the 20th century the customers preferences turned to lighter whiskies, and Springbank altered the taste of its whiskies by drying the malt over coal instead of peat.

 Springbank
Springbank is the only whisky producer that uses their own water supply entirely from beginning to end in the distilling process.
It is believed that whisky and the skills of distillation were brought in the sixth century by the Celts from Antrim, Northern Ireland, a mere ten miles across the wild Irish sea, to Campbeltown on the Mull of Kintyre, the home of Springbank.
The malted barley acquires this during the `mashing` process when the sugars are leeched out by warm, peaty water.
