Introduction: The Chesapeake Bay impact structure is a complex impact crater, 85 km in diameter, located in the subsurface of southeastern Virginia, USA (37'16.5N, 76' 0.7'W).
Assuming that the observed 85-km diameter structure represents the collapsed diameter after formation of the terraces, the transient crater diameter would have been about 50-54 km diameter with an excavation depth of about 5 km.
At 85-km diameter, this structure is well within the size range of complex craters with peak rings and central peaks.
