Varietal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Varietal wines are made primarily from a single variety of grape, and identify this variety on the label.
As vintners and consumers have become aware of the characteristics of individual varieties of wine grapes, wines have also come to be identified by varietal names.
For example, in Oregon, wines subject to its regulation must be identified by the grape varietal from which it was made, and must contain at least 95% of that varietal.

Used to create a semi-dry rosé varietal and (with Saperavi (Charni) and other wines) a semi-dry red wine blend.

Jancis Robinson in the Oxford Companion to Wine insists that the word "varietal" is specific to wines, not grapes -- thus, land is planted to the Zinfandel variety that goes into our Zinfandel varietal wine.
In that book they use "varietal" for wines and "variety" for grapes.) It's because of the old generic naming that the name "Chianti," for example, retains some unjust stigma in the US.

As a single varietal, Syrah is the basis for the great reds of the Northern Rhone; as an ingredient in blends, it contributes much of the character and aging potential for wines of the Southern Rhone.
The varietal is so prolific that it produces more wine than any other grape (even though Grenache and Spain’s Airén may cover a larger vineyard area).
Vaccarèse (known in the village of Chusclan as Camarèse) is a minor varietal found primarily in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where it is considered a relative of Cinsault and produces floral, tannic wines.

 Robert Mondavi - Wine Facts
Today the Chardonnay grape varietal has become virtually synonymous with "white table wine".
Because France was so devoted to geographic labeling at that time, the varietal was unknown except to grape growers and vintners.
With the advent of varietal labeling in the late 20th century that changed, however, and Chardonnay quickly became the most widely planted varietal worldwide.

Varietal labeling caught on in California and quickly became the status quo, even though regulations decreed that a varietally labeled wine needed only to contain 51 percent of the variety.
As the emphasis in California wine began to shift from bulk to quality, the dominance of varietal wines was secured, with grape varieties themselves becoming California's biggest vinous celebrities.

The other Cab / Traditionally a red blending grape, Cabernet Franc now is charging ahead as its own varietal
Although the grape has been planted in the state since the late 1960s, it didn't start gaining ground as a varietal wine until the 1980s.
Only a few years ago, the varietal could muster only a handful of entries and in some competitions the wine was often grouped with other reds.
Many of the wineries that make a varietal Cabernet Franc are small producers who sell their wine mainly in local markets.

Tablas Creek Vineyard Press Release: California "Rhonegades" Meet to Promote Rhone Varietal Blends
Despite widespread agreement among producers that blending Rhone varietals can produce superior wines, blends have encountered resistance from the market, and a lack of understanding from the buying public.
This identification would be combined with an appellation to eliminate confusion as to the New World origin of these wines, i.e.
Participants also agreed to jointly encourage retail stores and restaurants to include a "New World Rhone" category, which could incorporate both single-varietal wines (such as Syrah and Viognier) and blends, and to lobby industry publications to move Rhone wine into a category of its own, rather than in "other reds" or "other whites"
